What is Partner Yoga?

“We hadn’t bargained on how this yoga practice would enhance our friendship and deepen our relationship…”

Kate & Fiona Dynamic Partner Yoga Pose

While practicing yoga together, we discovered we had more physical connection in postures when we used our body weight, not just hands, to adjust each other. We began with simple adjustments, having fun just playing around with different dynamic positions. We started to research partner adjustments in the yoga world and realised there wasn’t much information on the subject. We played with leaning and relaxing into each other, holding arms and legs in varying positions, creating equal and opposite responses in movement with mutual benefit. We casually started to write down the partner postures and try them out on our students. At that time we were both practicing quite strong dynamic Ashtanga-style yoga and wanted to create something along those lines, using each other’s body to enhance the experience.

Two years later, we continued experimenting and documenting our partner practice realising we had created a lovely active program that we could share. We spent a couple of years filming and back in those days, with very little experience, we produced our first ever Dynamic Partner Yoga DVD which we sold all over the world.

What we hadn’t bargained on was how the practice would enhance our friendship and deepen our relationship: lots of laughter, a better understanding of each other and stronger emotional support, not to mention the warmth of our shared body heat on a cold winter’s day.

As we continued, our practice became softer and more relaxing. We recognised that this flowing sequence was different from any other we had encountered and when practised regularly, enabled two people to enjoy a combined experience. In this fast paced world, everyone looking out for themselves, friendships and partnerships can lack connection. Screens dominate our lives, lives little time to sit and just enjoy being with the ones you love. Our programme addresses this and will bring wonderful moments of shared joy to your life.
